Does the description bit have to be exactly 2000 and the about the organization bit have to be exactly 500... does it matter if there is a bit of 'slippage' meaneing that for example one is maybe 2012 and the other is 488 or one is 1092 and the other is 508? Sorry to be nit picky but just checking.

Agreed. Let's say, 5% either way.

I have the same problem as below, I guess it is with all of us.

The problem has been resolved. Please alert the secretary if you have any further difficulties.

Dear Berkeley Essay organisers,

I urgently need to draw your attention to a matter regarding the uploading of my final essay for the 2007 berkeley essay competition which i was chosen as a semi finalist for.

Aprox 2 weeks ago i placed a random chunk of text in the "edit stage 2 essay field". This was meerly a test and was NOT the final essay which i am still editing and isnt due until the dead line of the 28th.

However, when i went to upload my essay for stage 2-it said in the "stage 2 review" window "We are sorry, your Essay was not selected as a Finalist. Please see the comments and your scores below. Thank you very much for submitting your essay and we hope you will try again next year"

I thought we were allowed to edit and resubmit our essay as many times as we like up until the cut off date? This process of integral also to get the word limit to match 2500 words

Could you please resolve this matter with me asap-as i have spent a significant period of time and research putting my essay together and would hate that a red tape glitch got in the way of my potential chances of becoming finalist

regards

Hugh Snelgrove

Semi-finalist University of Sydney Architecture Faculty

Referring your question - and problem- to the Secretary. An answer is forthcoming.

Shall we list our refrences??would they be count as 2500 words which we have to submit?adding them would reduce the number of main essays words..

Perhaps the best way to handle references is to mention them in the body of your text where they will be more meaningful, especially if the citation itself or the authority or the quote is important to the point you are making. all the best

how can we select a team to make realize our idea for this project? it means how can we use the name of the choosen team in our essay?

Good question. Thanks. In your response to Stage 1, you were asked to select from the list of 15 teams we listed on the web site, the team that you thought would be the best to help you with the project you outlined in your essay. Now, in Stage 2, you want to "argue" for the team you selected by pointing out why, based on the team's building experience, it is best for the work. This could include several arguments(1)The team's experience in working with the people you are concerned about (2) The team's experience in working in your country, if it has done so (3)If the team has never worked in your country, why you think it would be adventageous to do so (4) Why you, personally, would like to work with this team and what you would hope to learn. And there are surely other arguments for your choice. all the best

how can we select a team, to make realize our idea for this project? it means how can we use the name of the choosen team in our essay

There are different reasons for selecting a team. Perhaps it is a team that has experience with the kind of project you wish to see built. Or it is a team that has had experience in your part of the world and you believe is sympathetic to its history and traditions. Or even, one could select a team that one feels would like to work with him/herself in the future. The important thing is to make your reason part of your essay. all the best

Will the initial 500 word proposal be presented with the 2500 word submission, or do we start from scratch (in terms of presenting the idea and background) in the 2500 word submission?

The 2,500 word submission should be able to stand alone, since your Stage 2 Readers are not the same people as in Stage 1, and will not have seen your proposal. Furthermore, while the 2,500 word essay should reflect the ideas explored in the proposal, the discussion may have to be recast in light of the Readers' Stage 1 comments.

I was wondering if being a semifinalist for the Essay Competition was a prerequisite for applying for the Travel Fellowship, or whether the Travel Fellowship Competition is open for all architecture students.

12 of the top ranking Stage 2 essayists will be invited to compete for the Travel Fellowship.

I hope you are among them! All the best

I am among semifinalists.can everyone give comment on my essay?the reviewers comments are from prize commitee?

No one, other than Berkeley Prize Committee members, have seen any essay proposals. Every essay proposal was reviewed by three members of the Berkeley Prize Committee. The reviews are "blind," meaning that the reviewer does not know the identity of the author, and vice versa. You can see who serves on the Berkeley Prize Committee by visiting the "Endowment" section of this website.

how do we know if we are semifinalists?

The Semifinalists have been announced. Please visit the 2007 Essay Competition home page, and click on "Stage 2: Semifinalists" to see if your proposal was chosen.

I assume the personal interests/affiliations on the profile page has no impact on the evaluation of the essay, as they are marked anonymously. Is that correct? What is the information used for, and can I include information about my team partner?

The personal information has no bearing officially. However, we would like to begin to build an understanding of what interests undergraduates around the world, who are studying architecture. Over the last 5 years, approximately 600 undergraduates in 30 countries have participated, responding to questions about Social Architecture which interest us. We want to find out, what interests students around the world. We thank you for your participation with this attempt to find out. today is 11 december and i can update my essay.1 day after deadline. is there any problem with my submitting? im so worried.

Regrets, but the rules are you can not.

What time is the deadline on December 10th?

Because of technical difficulties, we have extended the entry date until 12:00 Noon GMT, Wednesday, December 13.

Now my team has 2 different essays, can we register with these members again with different name and send these 2 essays throught these 2 channels?

There is only one essay allowed for an individual or team. However, if your team has TWO undergraduate architectural students, then the best thing for you to do is submit two separate entries under their two separate names. Because of technical difficulties, we have extended the entry date until 12:00 Noon GMT, Wednesday, December 13, so if you would like to additionally submit you may.

I wanna know if I can use a table in my essay?

The Question is to be answered in 500 words. You may use a table, but take care that it clearly expresses the intended idea.

My partner has completed his course requirements and is now a graduand but will not graduate from the undergraduate degree until mid 2007. Does this make us ineligible?

Your partner is not eligible. Only undergraduates who are enrolled, full-time are eligible. Sorry!

is chosing team part of 500 words?

Yes. Your choice of a team is to be included in your 500 word proposal. However, you are asked to only identify the team of your choice (from the list provided). If you are selected to enter Stage 2 of the competition, then you will be asked to argue for your team, as described in the competition brief. Good luck!!

i must select one team from 15 teams. if i must announce my choice while registration?

Yes, in Stage One, the 500 word essay, you select one of the 15 teams that you would want to work with on your proposed project.

applicants must select one of the 15 teams listed. ok but where i must announce my team for jury?

In Stage One, in the text of the 500 word essay, you select one of the 15 teams that you would want to work with on your proposed project.

What should we send you as a proof that we are undergarduate student? Also our university would give us OFFICIAL transcript when we graduate,so is it possible to send you unofficial transcript?

Good question; thanks. If your first essay (Stage 1) is selected and you are selected to write the second essay (Stage 2), we will ask your school to endorse your status as a full-time enrolled student majoring in Architecture before you will be invited to write the second essay.

I am an undergrad Architecture student in her last year of university. My team member is an Architecture graduate currently mastering in Urban Design. I'm not sure of our eligibility. Do we qualify even though she's a graduate student?

No, you don't qualify. The competition is only for undergraduates. Sorry.

1)can I make a team with another undergraduate architecture major? 2) can it be a project related to urban planning?

Yes, as undergraduates you may consider yourselves a team. Of course, I don't know what you mean by "urban planning" but believe that you best you read the Question, which asks for a most needed project in your town that, when built, would better the social situation for a population in need? Please fully and clearly describe the project and why you feel it is so important.

hi, can I team with another undergrad architecture major?

Yes. The rules are clear about this. I suggest you reread the conditions of entering the competition. Good luck!

can an applicant register without choosing a team from 15 teams?

No, applicants must select one of the 15 teams listed. The point is to introduce these 15 to students. Also, having only 15 ensures a consistent criteria for judging how well each argues for the one selected.

Hello, I realize that there are a few questions similar to this within the FAQ's of the 2007 Essay Competition Website, but I would appreciate clarification nonetheless:

I completed my first year of Architecture bachelor last year and was scheduled to return this fall, but at the end of the summer I was accepted to transfer schools and they gave me credit for this fall. So now I am working (as an Engineer, my previous degree) until I return to Architecture studies in January. Am I eligible?

If I am, great! If not, then the compilation of the "teams" is a great set of links!

Thanks so much

No, only those undergraduates enrolled "full time" are eligible. But thank you for your appreciation of the list of "teams". They are doing important work.

Hi - I was wondering exactly what counts as a student of social sciences. Would a law student majoring in environmental law be suitable? Thankyou in advance.

G. Bowen: You will be receiving a correction to our previous answer. In re-reading your question, it appears that you are a full-time law student, which is normally a graduate program. One must be a full-time undergraduate student (legal studies, for example), participating with a full-time undergraduate student of architecture, in order to compete. P>

For the competition, do we have to choose the town that we are currently living in? Can we choose a town that we know about, but have not visited?

Choose a town that you have visited, or even lived in, and which you know very well. The authenticity of your response to the Question will depend upon caring and first hand knowledge.

Can I submit two essays with2 diffrent subjects?

No, only one essay.

I am from Cedar Rapids, IA but I would like to write about a need for hurricane relief in the gulf coast, does this disqualify me from the competition because I am not from the Gulf? I am connected to it through a Katrina Design Studio at Iowa State University, is that enough of a connection?

Yes, you may write about any city you like, but I think you will write a more compelling essay if you know your choice very well; first hand.

I am an undergraduate engineering student (computer engineering). I was wondering if I am eligible to participate in your competition jointly with my friend, who is an undergraduate student majoring in architecture.

Yes, you may, however, the principal member of the team must be your friend who is majoring in Architecture.

i see this Essay competition now. can i register while i submbit my essay? i mean can i register and submit essay at the same time. are them one action?

By submitting your essay in Stage 1 you have in fact, registered for the essay competition.

When is the date of next Berkeley prize for 2007?

The website for the 2007 Berkeley Prize was launched on November 1, 2006. The first deadline, for the proposals, is December 10, 2006.

I was wondering if the semi finalists will be acknowledged on the site as well as the finalists?

We did not publish the names of the semi-finalists; we do post to the site all of the winners and their essays. These are available for you to read on the site.

can all of the essays of finalists be posted? Thank you

The essays of all of the Essay Prize winners have been posted. Look for them on the website under this year's Essay Competition "Winning Essays" section. Because of space and other considerations, we have never published all of the Finalists essays - just the winners. This year, particularly, the winning essays represent a good cross-section of the kinds of respnses we received.

While its not required to submit designs or drawings, is it actually possible to do so? Speaking on behalf of the essays that take the form of architectural (design) solutions.

Unfortunately, we do not have in place a system for either accepting or reviewing any visual material that you may have produced to accompany your essay. We are hoping that you will effectively illustrate your proposal with prose. Best of luck!

I would like to know if there is still a chance for registration

Regret the late reply. Once the entry point of December 10 was reached, it was not possible to accept late registrations. Regrets

Can we edit essays after december,10th and is it necessary to registrate somewhere else or just by having author portofolio?

No, you can't edit your essay once it has been submitted. And having submitted your essay, you have officially entered the competition. No other registration is necessary

I would like to know whether we should propose only "architectural" ways in the essay since this is a competition for architectural students.

The question is open-ended. An "architectural solution" may or may not be the most interesting or compelling response to the question. It depends upon your idea.

I am attending a 2 Year Community College to complete my Undergrad Studies. I currently work fulltime as an Architecture Draftsman / Intern, and I attend school fulltime pursueing my Associates Degree in Architecture before I transfer to a 4 year school. Our 2 Year School has an activie AIAS Chapter, of which I am the Chapter President. Other Chapter members have asked me if we are elgible to enter this competition due to our school program being a 2 year degree in Architecture?

Dear Michael Gilbert--Your interest and involvements are admirable. However, the Berkeley Prize Endoment specifies only full time undergraduates pursuing either the BArch or Major in Architecture, in accredited schools of architecture may compete. Next year, then! all the best

I will complete my full time semester in 28 Nov 05, Am I still eligible?

Unless you are officially an undergraduate until May 2006, you are not eligible. Regrets.

i am studying master of urban design in iran,am i eligible to participate in the competition?

Dear Solmaz Hosseinioon--Thank you for your question. No, you are not eligible if you are a graduate student. The competitions are open only to undergraduates. All the best The Berkeley Prize

i'm a third year student from Australia graduating in B of Env Design (Part 1) end of this year. but i would continue the B of Arch next year (4th year), will i be still eligible to enter the contest?

You may team up with a full time undergraduate student of architecture, but until you are a full time student of architecture, you are not eligible to compete on your own.

I direct the nonprofessional (full time, undergraduate) architecture program at a liberal arts college and I want to encourage my students to apply, though it's still unclear to me if they are eligible. They are full time, undergraduate, students enrolled in an official architecture major, which in our school happens to fall in the Art Department. Are they eligible?

Yes, if their undergraduate degree is either the professional degree of Bachelor of Architecture or BA, with a Major in Architecture

I participated twice in this competition. Once as a member of the group and secend time as an individual, participant. Can I participate in this way for the secend time or not?

Thank you for your inquiry. You may enter the competition once each year, either as an individual, or as a team member, but not both ways in one year.

Will the bibliography submitted count towards the total word limit of the proposal essay?

Yes. However, I would advise that you integrate your references into your text as authoritative "voices", as you might in an article for a serious, daily newspaper.

Two of us are teaming up, my friend has already registered with as an author, my question to you is that, Do I need to make my individual author profile (mentioning my team in the form provided) as well or should I simply put my name in his profile as a team member? In that case, aren't my student identification numbers and other details required?

Yes, place your name in his profile as a team member and if your team succeeds in becoming a finalist, then you will be asked to render your personal student details.

I am a student of Landscape Architecture, and one of my professors has circulated the information for this competition under the impression that BLAs are also eligible. Is this true?

I regret to say that the competition is open to undergraduate architecture students or to a team of an architecture student + a student in urban studies and or one of the Social Sciences.

Is there any particular format to the proposal? As in- Do I write about the technique and style I'm going to adopt as well as the issues I shall be addressing?

If by format you mean style, then the answer is, write simply and clearly, as you would in a letter to a friend who is eager to become well informed about your subject.

How does a European student, where we do not differentiate between undergraduate and graduate, know if he is eligible? Do you consider bachelors and masters in the same way?

By Undergraduates we mean students who are pursing their first degree in architecture, which may be professional or non-professional.

It states on the eligibility page that an architecture student can pair up with a planning student for the writing of the essay. Do the students have to attend the same school? Or can they attend different schools which are both accredited?

No, the students can attend different schools, as long as one is an architecture student at an accredited school, while the other can be in urban studies or the social sciences.

I'm a pre-architecture student within the History of Art and Architecture department at a college. Am I eligible?

To be eligible one must be a full-time student enrolled in a department, school or college of architecture.
